Bank Holiday Car Hacks

Ah, the Bank Holidays. A glorious excuse to hit the road, soak up (hopefully) some sunshine, and escape the daily grind — whether it’s a full family day out or just you, a flask of coffee, and your favourite playlist.

But before you chuck everything in the boot and set off on a grand British road trip, let us help you get prepped, Car Friend-style.

🚘 Your Bank Holiday Car Prep Checklist: Remember T.R.I.P.S.

Because no one wants to be stuck on the hard shoulder explaining to the kids why the picnic is now happening on the verge of the M6…

Our easy-to-remember acronym has you covered:

  • TTyres
Check the pressure, tread depth, and keep an eye out for any bulges or nails. Underinflated tyres mean less grip and more fuel burned.

  • RRattles & Noises
That squeak? That groan? If your car’s trying to tell you something, don’t ignore it. A quick check now saves a costly fix later.

  • IInterior Check
Clear out the empty coffee cups, ancient crisp packets and forgotten Christmas chocolates (yes, really). Repack with essentials like wipes, tissues, water, and snacks.

  • PPet Prep
If the dog’s coming along, make sure they’re safe and comfy. Use a dog seatbelt harness or crate, bring water, a familiar blanket, and crack the windows (not too far — no unplanned exits, please).

  • SScreenwash & Fluids
Bugs. Pollen. Sudden spring showers. You’ll need a clean windscreen — and working wipers. Top up your screenwash and check oil and coolant while you’re at it.

Got a noise you’re worried about? Or tyres that haven’t been looked at since last summer? Pop in and we’ll give your motor a once-over before you hit the road.

🎲 Top 5 Road Trip Games (For When the iPad Battery Dies)

No one wants to hear the words “I’m bored” before you’ve even reached the A5. Here are five trusty games that’ll keep everyone (well, mostly everyone) entertained:

  1. “I Spy” — with a twist
Add challenges like “I spy something that makes a noise” or “something that starts with the sound, not the letter.”

  2. The Alphabet Game
Spot road signs or shop names starting with each letter of the alphabet, in order. Gets intense when you hit “X” and “Z.”

  3. 20 Questions
Someone thinks of something, and the rest have 20 yes/no questions to figure it out. Kids love it, adults get weirdly competitive.

  4. Would You Rather?
“Would you rather have a car made of jelly or powered by burps?” The sillier the better — guaranteed giggles.

  5. Build-a-Story
One person starts a story with a sentence, and everyone else adds to it in turn. By the time you get to the services, it’s a masterpiece.

🐶 Taking the Dog? Here’s How to Make It Less Ruff

Dogs are part of the family — and they love a good day out. But a car trip can be stressful (for you and for them) if you’re not prepared:

  • Plan breaks for leg stretches and loo time (for everyone).
  • Keep them safe with a seatbelt harness or crate — it’s the law.
  • Avoid big meals right before the trip to reduce travel sickness.
  • Pack their gear — water, bowl, poo bags, treats, and their favourite toy or blanket to keep them calm.

Hot tip: if your dog hates the car, try short practice drives before the big trip. And leave the windows cracked — not flung wide — to avoid sudden leaps of freedom!
